Addition of Signed Numbers with Different Signs

Here's another one:

2 + -8 + 10 + -3 + -6 =

2 + -8 + 10 + -3 + -6 = -5

What do we get if we group the positives and the negatives?

2 + 10 = 12

-8 + -3 + -6 = -17

12 + -17 = -5

Let's do one without the car:

-12 + 20 + 31 + -47 + 5 =

Group the positives and the negatives...

20 + 31 + 5 = 56

-12 + -47 = -59

Add them together...

56 + -59 = -3

and we get our answer!

-12 + 20 + 31 + -47 + 5 = -3
