Subtracting works the same way -- you just really have to be careful with the minus!

Check it out:

( 5x^2 + 3x - 6 ) - ( 3x^2 - x + 5 ) = 5x^2 + 3x - 6 - 3x^2 + x - 5 = ( 5x^2 - 3x^2 ) + ( 3x + x ) + ( -6 - 5 ) = 2x^2 + 4x - 11

And, no, you don't have to write out all these steps once you get good at these.  I'm just showing a bunch of steps so you can follow it.

YOUR TURN:

( 3x^2 - 4x + 8 ) - ( x^2 + 7x - 5 )

Before I do the next one, do this for me:

Subtract 3 from 5.
