Let's identify each thing that's going on:

x = -2 ( y + 1 )^2 + 4 ... the y guy is squared -- so, it's sideways! ... the ( - ) means it faces left ... the 2 makes it twice as tall ... the " + 1" shifts it down to y = -1 ... the "+ 4" shifts it 4 to the right (towards positive x's)
