So, let's look at what happens when you add two negative numbers:

Look at it on a number line:

a number line showing -2 + -3 = -5

-2 + -3 = -5

So, when you add two negative numbers, you get a negative answer!

A fun way to look at this is to put a car on a number line. (Have it facing to the right.)

If the number you are adding is positive, the car drives forward...

2+4=6
