-5^2
This negative is out in front and not locked into the 5!

-5^2 = - 5 x 5 = -25
The negative stays out in front!

So,

(-5)^2 = 25 and -5^2 = -25

Here's another set:

(-3)^2 and -3^2

What do they mean?

(-3)^2 = (-3)(-3) = 9 and -3^2 = - 3 x 3 = -9

Write out what each one means and find the answer:
