What happens is that the two students end up
sitting together completely lost,
having a pity party, complaining about how much they hate math and
stinking
together!
Having a group with a range of abilities helps everyone. It makes the
weak students stronger through the assistance
of the strong students… and it
makes the strong students stronger because they
are getting practice
explaining things to the weaker students.
Let’s talk about students who usually have pretty good math grades.
Just because a person can manage to get a good
grade in a math class
doesn’t necessarily mean that he/she really
understands what’s going on.
Have you ever sat next to a person in a math
class and asked, “Hey, did you
get #11 in the homework?” and get an
unsatisfying and annoying answer
like, “Yeah, but I have no idea how I got it.”
Pretty frustrating, isn’t it? Or
maybe it was you who gave this answer to
someone else? Well, a good study
group can turn this seemingly lucky, yet
clueless math student into a real
student with solid math knowledge!
