I started our first website, Coolmath.com, in
the Spring of 1997. I had really just started the site to help
my community college students and show them some cool things about
math like tessellations and fractals.
Even though there was no Google back then,
people started to find the site and I started to get emails from
visitors... and a lot of them were from kids! They thought the
sites was... wait for it... COOL (of course), but they said, "Hey,
can you put some stuff on here for kids?" So, I made a website
just for them and called it Coolmath4kids.com.
Teaching a college class called "Math for Elementary Teachers" was a
specialty of mine, so I started to use that info to make some cool
lessons and games for kids. I was really excited about having
a kids math website because I hated math when I was a kid. It
was boring in school and I didn't think that I was good at it, so I
didn't give it a chance. I don't want kids to suffer like I
did - I want them to know that math is FUN and COOL!
Coolmath4kids.com has all sorts of
Arithmetic lessons -
Addition
lessons,
Subtraction lessons,
Multiplication and Times Table lessons,
Division lessons,
Long
Division lessons and even what every 4th grader needlessly
dreads:
Fraction lessons! (Fractions are very fun, by the way!)
The site also has a bunch of practice games like the first game I
ever made,
The
Number Monster. Once kids get up to decimals, we graduate
them to Coolmath.com!
In May of 2011, Coolmath4kids.com got to
help 5,333,192 kids!!! How cool is that?
