OK, so what if the extra thing on Standard Parabola Guy is INSIDE parentheses WITH THE x?

Like this guy:

Hmm...  It's still a parabola.  If we FOIL it...

So, what's going on with the graph of this thing?

Here's the game I play on these:


I pretend that this guy's whole goal in life is to be

 What value of x will make him happy?

So, we'll start him over at x = 3:

This is a horizontal shift.

Now, with our new and exciting knowledge, let's graph this guy:

Graph these and remember to show your work by identifying what's going on -- don't make a "plotting points" table!

Let's sum up what we've got here...

When there's a number INSIDE with the x guy...

If it's (x-3), he moves over to x=3... That's 3 to the right.
If it's
(x+2), he moves over to x=-2...
That's
2 to the left.
So... Look at the h and move HORIZONTALLY in the opposite direction.
