This means that all numbers less than -3 will work in the original problem:

3x + 2 < x - 4

number line showing x is less than -3

Try sticking some numbers in:

for x = -10, 3(-10) + 2 < -10 - 4 which gives -28 < -14 Yep!

 for x = 50, 3(50) + 2 < 50 - 4 which gives 152 < 46 nope!

    for x = -3, 3(-3) + 2 < -3 - 4 which gives -7 < -7 nope!

So, the answer in interval notation is:

( negative infinity, -3 )

It's definitely a good idea to try some numbers to make sure you've got that arrow pointing in the right direction.  This will save your caboose in the next section AND on tests!

YOUR TURN:

(and remember to always ditch the smaller x guy first!)

Solve

8x - 3 is less than or equal to 13

10x - 7 > 4x + 35
