What does this thing mean?

( xy )^4

It's 4 blobs of (xy) all multiplied together:

( xy )^4 = ( x^4 )( y^4 )

We can cut to the chase and, kind of, distribute the exponent into each guy:

( xy )^4 = ( x^4 )( y^4 )

Here's the official rule:

Exponent Rule #5: ( ab )^n = ( a^n )( b^n )
